Restore Our Fortunes, O Lord
A Song of Ascents.
When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream. Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then they said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.” The Lord has done great things for us;
we are glad. Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like streams in the Negeb!
Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy! He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.
I’ve entered the wonderful eighties where you get less done, but you understand there may be tomorrow to accomplish the task. Yes, we move slower and we often think of a life that was much different than it is today. We did not have to worry about some goofball using the Lord’s name in vain, or the F word on our T.V.
We were safe in our school and did not need to have security teams to protect us at school are the church. We did not have social media for people to expose their ignorance and lies and our New papers reported the news without editorializing they had an editorial page for that.
Some of us had parents that taught us at a very young age the value of work, and of doing the job right the first time. Most of us went to Church on Sundays and learned Bible verses that have given us guidance in our lives.
We were taught the value of family and friends and we still put great value on those areas. So as I read this Song in Psalm 126, I ponder on this line; ”The Lord has done great things for us; we are glad. Restore our fortunes,” Now I’m not referring to my bank account, no, something of much great value. All the things I shared above, but yet something of even greater value, the Truth. Jesus tells us in John 14:1-7, “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
