The Super Bowl and life on planet Earth have many things in common

What I learned from watching the Super Bowl

Paper from 2017

The Super Bowl and life on planet Earth have many things in common, both have time segments in the Super Bowl we call them quarters, and in this life, we call them the seasons. Youth would be the first quarter, the second quarter is moving out of youth into becoming a young adult, and with that more responsibility, the third quarter is for most, marriage and raising a family, and the fourth quarter is for many retirements.

We all expect to make it until the fourth quarter, but that’s not a sure bet, for it seems life-like football has many surprises.  Many a person believed last night that it was a done deal when the score was 28 – 3, but they still had a quarter to go, and surprise surprise, it did not happen the way some expected.

The Bible gives insight into the game of life, and it also has surprises.  “Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.”  Psalm 139:16) What about Matthew 6:27, “And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?”  And James 4:14, “Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.”  Many of us my age act as if we have years to go in the game of life, but a wise person understands no one knows but the Father when our time on planet Earth will come to an end.

God sent His Son to buy you and me out of the grip of sin by dying on a cross and paying our sin debt.  It is simple we have all sinned and fallen short of God’s requirement, and Jesus did what we could not do; paid a debt He did not owe.  His grace is free to all who will by faith in His finished work on the cross and ask Him for forgiveness and believe in our hearts that God has raised Him from the dead.  That is how one enters by faith into Christ and becomes clean by His blood shed for the forgiveness of sin.

Now many a person has come up with a better plan, it is called religion, your goodness, what you can do, but a Holy God calls that foolishness, or as stated in the Bible, it is to Him as filthy rags.  Or as mentioned in Proverbs 14:12, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.”

So, since none of us knows the time of our fourth quarter, why have it be a surprise, but be ready, with expectations.

David Organizes the Musicians

 1 Chronicles 25

April 14, 2023

David Organizes the Musicians

David and the chiefs of the service also set apart for the service the sons of Asaph, and of Heman, and of Jeduthun, who prophesied with lyres, with harps, and with cymbals. The list of those who did the work and of their duties was:  Of the sons of Asaph: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asharelah, sons of Asaph, under the direction of Asaph, who prophesied under the direction of the king.  Of Jeduthun, the sons of Jeduthun: Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei,[a] Hashabiah, and Mattithiah, six, under the direction of their father Jeduthun, who prophesied with the lyre in thanksgiving and praise to the Lord.  Of Heman, the sons of Heman: Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel and Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, and Romamti-ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, Mahazioth.  All these were the sons of Heman the king's seer, according to the promise of God to exalt him, for God had given Heman fourteen sons and three daughters.  They were all under the direction of their father in the music in the house of the Lord with cymbals, harps, and lyres for the service of the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman were under the order of the king. The number of them along with their brothers, who were trained in singing to the Lord, all who were skillful, was 288.  And they cast lots for their duties, small and great, teacher and pupil alike.

My daughter, on my 81st birthday, said Dad Byron and I came up with a slogan for you, you're no longer in the fourth quarter, you are in overtime.  My brother sent me a tee shirt, that said I had reached the age of the old people.  And after some somber reflection, I believe they may be telling the truth.  Before you write me off, I must share that, I with some help from my bride put the deck on the roof, and I must confess they are putting lead in those 4X8 sheets of plywood.

I’m trying to address with a little humor what I am going to say about music in many Churches, and our assembly is no exception.   Let me be clear this overtime, may be the issue. I had never taken a stand till Easter service, and it was an outpouring of the Spirit of God.

But when it came to the music, IT seemed to be more of a conceit, the lights down, and all the center on the stage, just lack a concert   If the Lord moved you to read HIS Word, you would not be able to. I do not know anybody's heart, but I do know the flesh likes center stage.

David Organizes the Priests

1 Chronicles 24

April 13, 2023

David Organizes the Priests

God used David to do so but it was according to the Law handed down to Mosses.  This Gentile saw names but made no doubt it was all according to God's direction. Verse 19 gives us good insight into the plan for these men. These had as their appointed duty in their service to come into the house of the Lord according to the procedure established for them by Aaron their father, as the Lord God of Israel had commanded him.

As you ponder on that 19th verse, think about the commands Jesus gave us who have received Him as our Lord.  Love the Lord your God with all your heart.  Love your neighbor as yourself.  Those are just a couple and do remember your neighbor is anyone you encounter.  I found it impossible to do so, in my strength, so I had to run to Jesus often, and He promised to do it all for me.

What Job or Task Has God Given you

1 Chronicles 23:7-32

April 11, 2023

Reading these verses, a non-Jewish person such as most who go by the title of Christian may skip over, but you will miss the application that God is establishing for His people.  Each one in Aaron and Moses family were given a job or task that only they could do, and that included the tribe of the Levi’s.  Aaron was set apart to dedicate the most holy things, that he and his sons forever should make offerings before the Lord and minister to him and pronounce blessings in his name forever.   But the sons of Moses the man of God were named among the tribe of Levi.

This was the calling for the tribe of Levi; For David said, “The Lord, the God of Israel, has given rest to his people, and he dwells in Jerusalem forever.  And so, the Levites no longer need to carry the tabernacle or any of the things for its service.”  For by the last words of David the sons of Levi were numbered from twenty years old and upward.   For their duty was to assist the sons of Aaron for the service of the house of the Lord, having the care of the courts and the chambers, the cleansing of all that is holy, and any work for the service of the house of God.  Their duty was also to assist with the showbread, the flour for the grain offering, the wafers of unleavened bread, the baked offering, the offering mixed with oil, and all measures of quantity or size.  And they were to stand every morning, thanking and praising the Lord, and likewise at evening, and whenever burnt offerings were offered to the Lord on Sabbaths, new moons, and feast days, according to the number required of them, regularly before the Lord  Thus, they were to keep charge of the tent of meeting and the sanctuary, and to attend the sons of Aaron, their brothers, for the service of the house of the Lord.”

We the Church, once more not a building where the Church comes to do corporate worship, but people who have by the faith God has given them, know that Christ is living in them.  Blaise Pascal was 100% on target when he made this quote: “Truth is so obscure in these times, and falsehood so established, that, that unless we love the truth, we cannot know it.”  Also, “All men’s miseries derive from not being able to sit in a quiet room alone.”  Lastlyif we do not know ourselves to be full of pride, ambition, lust, weakness, misery, and injustice, we are indeed blind. And if knowing this, we do not desire deliverance, what can we say of a man...?  You may find it of interest that Blaise Pascal lived from 1623-1662 and he was a French mathematician, physicist, inventor, philosopher, and Catholic writer. He was a child prodigy who was educated by his father, a tax collector in Rouen.

Once again, I am reminded of my dad who had a love for history, and would often say we learn nothing from history are we would not keep repeating it.

David Organizes the Levites

1 Chronicles 23:1-6

April 10, 2023

David Organizes the Levites

When David was old and full of days, he made Solomon his son king over Israel.

David assembled all the leaders of Israel and the priests and the Levites.  The Levites, thirty years old and upward, were numbered, and the total was 38,000 men. “Twenty-four thousands of these,” David said, “shall have charge of the work in the house of the Lord, 6,000 shall be officers and judges, 4,000 gatekeepers, and 4,000 shall offer praises to the Lord with the instruments that I have made for praise.”  And David organized them in divisions corresponding to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

David was old and full of days, my daughter came for my birthday and said Dad you do understand you are no longer in the fourth quarter, you’re in overtime.  It sounds as if David was in overtime, and he made sure that his young son had all he needed to complete the task, that God had given him.

That brings a question: how have you prepared your children to finish the task that God has for them.  Have you invested in their spiritual growth?  And I am not talking about taking them to church, but about by example living in such a manner that they have seen God work in your life.

Solomon Charged to Build the Temple

1 Chronicles 22:6-19

April 9, 2023

Solomon Charged to Build the Temple

Then he called for Solomon his son and charged him to build a house for the Lord, the God of Israel.  David said to Solomon, “My son, I had it in my heart to build a house to the name of the Lord my God.  But the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ‘You have shed much blood and have waged great wars. You shall not build a house to my name, because you have shed so much blood before me on the earth.  Behold, a son shall be born to you who shall be a man of rest. I will give him rest from all his surrounding enemies. For his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quiet to Israel in his days.  He shall build a house for my name. He shall be my son, and I will be his father, and I will establish his royal throne in Israel forever.’

“Now, my son, the Lord be with you, so that you may succeed in building the house of the Lord your God, as he has spoken concerning you.  Only, may the Lord grant you discretion and understanding, that when he gives you charge over Israel you may keep the law of the Lord your God.  Then you will prosper if you are careful to observe the statutes and the rules that the Lord commanded Moses for Israel. Be strong and courageous.  Fear not; do not be dismayed.  With great pains I have provided for the house of the Lord 100,000 talents of gold, a million talents of silver, and bronze and iron beyond weighing, for there is so much of it; timber and stone, too, I have provided. To these, you must add.  You have an abundance of workmen: stonecutters, masons, carpenters, and all kinds of craftsmen without numbers, skilled in working gold, silver, bronze, and iron. Arise and work! The Lord be with you!”

David also commanded all the leaders of Israel to help Solomon his son, saying, “Is not the Lord your God with you? And has he not given you peace on every side? For he has delivered the inhabitants of the land into my hand, and the land is subdued before the Lord and his people.  Now set your mind and heart to seek the Lord your God. Arise and build the sanctuary of the Lord God, so that the ark of the covenant of the Lord and the holy vessels of God may be brought into a house built for the name of the Lord.”

Yesterday we address from disappointment to preparation, and today we see a dad talking to his young son about a plan God has for him.  He explains why God would not allow him to build, and how he had provided the people with the skills and the materials to do the job.  Yes, David's dreams did not happen as he had hoped, but as a dad, I can testify David is finding great joy in knowing how God will use Solomon.

You will notice the yellow highlights, they are wise words, and a dad who loves his child will share with them.  1. Be strong and courageous. Fear not; do not be dismayed. 2. Arise and work! The Lord be with you!” 3. Now set your mind and heart to seek the Lord your God.

Who is your Neighbor?

Chapter 16

Soldier of the Cross – Who is your Neighbor?

After 23 years of living in the Houston area, Jan and I were drawn to the hill country of Texas.  As we looked for a place to live it seemed that God had opened a door for us at a new area called Mountain Springs Ranch.  Looking back it was so cool how God sent the right people at just the right time to direct our path, not only to the property but also to the builder that was to build our new home.  I would be lying if I said it all went smoothly, it was a long time before we moved into that house.  First Jan and I cleared the cedar off the land, and did it have cedar.  It also did not have level ground, it was the hill country and that meant as we cut trees, we had to pull them up or down and it seemed up more often than down.  We had to learn how to keep from falling and I was a very slow learner.

In this slow process of clearing, we often got to meet the few neighbors that had built or were getting ready to build.  We went to building fairs and at one of those we met two men whom we believed God had sent to us for the building of our new home.  Both men turned out to be men of faith in Jesus Christ, and both were very different in how they built a home.  John Moon was more the hands-on type and I was drawn to him Kyle Lindsey seemed to be more organized and Jan was very comfortable with him.  After many visits and prayers, we choose Kyle.  To this day we believe both men would have built us a great house, and yet God opened two doors.  We got to meet more neighbors or people who would someday be our neighbors, as we went through the long 9 months of building the house.  It was during those nine months that the Lord began to put into our hearts a love and a mission to love our neighbors.

I believe confession is not only good it is required by our Lord, so I must share that this was new for us, new directions, but an old commandment to love your neighbors.  It seemed I was always too busy to even get to know more than the few neighbors that live close to us so this was new ground, it was a new mission.  If only I had understood, if only I had not been so busy I might have been still, and the Spirit would have shown me what He had shown George MacDonald in the 1800’s.  It is titled, “My Neighbor”, A man must not choose his neighbor: he must take the neighbor that God sends him …. The neighbor is just the man who is next to you at the moment, the man with whom any business has brought you into contact.”  If you have never read George MacDonald’s writing let me suggest, (C. S. Lewis – George MacDonald and Anthology 365 readings).  MacDonald shares on page 26  “The love of our neighbors is the only door out of the dungeon of self, …”  It seems like it always comes down to “But How” How can I love the person who hates me, the one who if given the opportunity would do me harm or even kill me?  My dad was a man of faith, and he told us often that if we could see a person as God saw them, then we could see that they were redeemable.  George MacDonald said in a title; “What Cannot Be Loved”, “But how can we love a man or woman who . . . is mean, unlovely, carping, uncertain, self-righteous, self-seeking, and self-admiring? - who can ever sneer, the most inhuman of human faults, far worse in its essence than mere murder?  These things cannot be loved.  The best man hates them most; the worst man cannot love them.  But are these the man? . . . Lies there not within the man or women a divine element of brotherhood, or sisterhood, a something lovely and loveable slowly fading, it may be – dying away under the fierce heat of vile passions, or the yet more fearful cold of sepulchral selfishness, but there? . . . It is the very presence of this fading humanity that makes it possible for us to hate.  If it were an animal only, and not a man or a woman, that did us hurt, we should not hate: we should only kill.”

So my dear soldier of the Cross-, what has the Commander instructed us in the manufacturer's handbook Has he not said in Mark 12:29-31 “The most important is, Hear O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.  And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.  The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’  There is no other commandment greater than these.”  My dear fellow soldier, did you understand, that these are the big ones, all the others come after these.  So if you are too busy or just not interested in loving your God and Loving your neighbor, you're not pleasing, you are not pleasing your Commander in Chief.   So you may be the big dog at your church, you may be the preacher, the big giver of money, you may hold the title of chairman of the women's circle or chairman of deacons, but you are not pleasing to God.  I often have made the mistake of looking at the Commander's views in the book of James.  In James 2:8 -10 “If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well.  But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.  For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it.”   Show partiality; what about just do not care?  What about I’m too busy and it's just too big a job, let someone else love those people.

I must revisit my confession; I’ve dropped the ball, on these two commands.  I did not show the love of Jesus Christ to those who worked beside me, and I did not show love for those who thought differently from me, I have blown it and I am guilty and accountable for all.  So how about you, how are you doing?  Jesus said the proof of being a soldier on the cross is if you love one another.  He also said in John 15:12 “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.”  You may be like me just beginning to obey the Father's command to love Him and love others.  My prayer is that my hero George MacDonald’s words will keep ringing in our ears and our hearts; “A man must not choose his neighbor: he must take the neighbor that God sends him. The neighbor is just the man who is next to you at the moment, the man with whom any business has brought you into contact.”

"IS"

 “Is”

Mark, someone once said if you’re going to write, you should have a title, how about the word “is”, it became a somewhat important word, when our late President Bill Clinton asked the question what is, is.  I will get back to the answer a little later, but first I would like to look back at what was in my life and how it relates to the word “is”.

Robert Wayne Rice showed up on planet Earth on April 10, 1942, and the world seemed to be in a mess, Pearl Harbor had happened December 1, 1941, and there was a lot of uncertainty both economically and politically, my mother and dad called me Bobby.  I was too young to know or understand but I’m quite sure the America I showed up in was full of fear, confusion, doubt, and uncertainty, not many years before we had fought the war to end all wars, and not many years had passed since America and Europe had gone through what was called the “Great Depression”.   And once more the loss of business, wealth, homes, and land, may have left our parents with fear, confusion, doubt, and uncertainty, but let me go back to my story.

Ten years later, or as I was reaching my tenth birthday in 1952 strange things were happening at school, we were talking about bomb shelters, and having lessons at school on how to get under our little wood desk in case of a bomb.  The United States was in what was to be called the KOREAN CONFLICT, I was only ten, but I was somewhat confused, why would anyone want to bomb Oak Park Elementary school, why would they want to kill me, my friends, or the people of Corpus Christi, Texas.  I did not know, and it caused confusion, doubt, and uncertainty, in my thinking, the good news was Mother told me not to fear that God would take care of us, I still trusted my mother so it was not so terrifying.

Ten years later I was twenty years of age, it was 1962 and the fear, confusion, doubt, and uncertainty were still in my world, now I seemed to understand them better.  I was one year out of High School and soon to be going to boot camp.  A guy named Nikita Kruschev was banging his shoe on the table at the United Nations, saying, “We will bury you”.  On October 22, 1962, after reviewing newly acquired intelligence, President John F. Kennedy informed the world that the Soviet Union was building secret missile bases in Cuba, a mere 90 miles off the shores of Florida and I was wondering if I would have a future.

Ten years later I was the young age of thirty, it was 1972 the prime rate hit 10 percent, and America was in the middle of an oil embargo I was working for 3M Company selling copy machines and my daughter Natalie was almost three years old and I was not sure I could make it in that economy.  It was also the year that Israeli athletes were taken as hostages during the Olympic games in Munich, September 5, 1972, and once more fear, confusion, doubt, and uncertainty were a big part of my worldview.

Ten years later I was forty, it was 1982 and we were experiencing a 17 percent interest rate.  We had an oil crisis and we had high inflation and my world was changing and my old friend Fear was very close to me.  If I could look into the future it would have been even gloomier.  In 1983, the closing of my Division at 3M and the possibility of not being employed caused some uncertainty, fear, and confusion in our lives.

Ten years later and if you add the numbers I am 50 years old and the year is 1992, and it seems the United States is getting a big break; Boris Yeltsin announces that Russia will stop targeting United States cities with nuclear weapons.  We have a jury acquitting four police officers accused in the videotaped beating of black motorist Rodney King, causing the 1992 Los Angeles riots and leading to 53 deaths and $1 billion in damage,  we found a new enemy, and he lives among us.  Bill Clinton defeats incumbent U.S. President George H.W. Bush and businessman H. Ross Perot.  Yes, I am still having fear, and confusion, with a lot of uncertainty, what will this new President do and how will he act?  He will always be known as the President who said, "It depends on what the meaning of the word 'isis.

Ten years later and I am sixty and the year is 2002, the United States Dept. of  Justice announced it will pursue a criminal investigation of Enron.  We came to know that this large corporation had lied and stolen millions from their employees and American stockholders.  In March the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan: In eastern AfghanistanOperation Anaconda began and in HoustonTexasAndrea Yates is found guilty of drowning her 5 children on June 202001. She is later sentenced to life in prison.  The US State Department releases a report naming 7 state sponsors of terrorism: IranIraqCubaLibyaNorth KoreaSudan, and Syria. Also, the  Congress of the United States passed a joint resolution, which explicitly authorizes the President to use the United States Armed Forces as he deems necessary and appropriate, against Iraq.  My friend's fear and uncertainty are still standing on all condors and he is being very convincing.

It is now 2007 and I am 65 years of age, the Lord has blessed me with a great wife, and family both Jan and I have been given the gift of good health and the Lord has blessed us with many blessings.  Our son-in-law, Byron, is a man who loves God and our daughter, and they have two boys, whom we love, John Mark and Zachary David.  The war is still going on in Iraq and it seems to not be going well; that’s what the press is saying.  Al Gore is telling us that we only have a few years left before man annihilates the world that God spoke into being.  Many people are buying into global warming and it and the war are causing fear, uncertainty, and confusion.

My goal in writing this was to leave a record for my two grandsons, that life in this world is full of fear, confusion, doubt, and uncertainty, unless you know what “is, is”.  At the age of 27 years, I began a relationship with God Himself, and I hope you heard I began, in some small ways I can identify with a great name in the Bible, a guy called Moses.  He got into a lot of trouble trying to help God out and in his attempt to help God he killed an Egyptian and had to flee Egypt and became a shepherd or a keeper of sheep.  Then God spoke to him from a bush that was burning but it was not consumed, now a bush burning is no big deal but one that is burning and not consumed is worth seeing and that is what Moses did.  We all know the story, but I bet you may not have seen the answer to Bill Clinton's “ is question, "It depends on what the meaning of the word 'isis.”  God has told Moses to go back to Egypt and tell, not ask, but tell Pharaoh to let God’s people go.  Let us pick up the story in Exodus 3: 13-14 “Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?”  God said to Moses, I am Who I am” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘I am has sent me to you.”  Do you see it, God is, is, there is no other.  Dan Stone wrote in the book title, “The Rest of the Gospel” the following: “He told Moses to tell the Hebrews that “I AM” had sent him.  God’s very name indicates the changeless, timeless, eternal, present-tense nature of His being, Jesus used the same language to refer to Himself: “I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am” (John 8:58).  The writer to the Hebrews stated: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”  God “is” the unseen, eternal, timeless, changeless One.

Never forget that Jesus, the changeless, timeless One became a seen and temporal man and as a man, Jesus experienced all that we experience but unlike us, He did not sin.  He never forgot his identity, He being God, was holy, pure, and without sin.  And this is the kicker, He also did not depend on anything or anyone but His Father, He drew all His power to live life from His Father in heaven and that is what each of us must do to live life in a world that is filled with fear, confusion, doubt, and uncertainty.

Bill Bright is one of my heroes and he makes this statement: “God is not “the man upstairs.”  He is not a divine Santa Claus.  He is not a cosmic policeman.  He is the One who spoke, and a hundred billion galaxies were flung into space.  To give you a little perspective, our planet Earth is like a grain of sand in our galaxy, and our galaxy is no more than a grain of sand in the vastness of all creation.  The God who created it all is manifest in the person of Jesus Christ, for He “is the visible expression of the invisible God” (Colossians 1:15, Phillips).  He created it all, and the Scripture says He holds it all together by the word of His command.”

If the Scripture is true and I am staking my life now and the eternal life on one man, the God-man Jesus Christ.  He has become my life, He is living in me and I am living in Him. John Mark and Zachary David, you do not have to worry about the things that our world fears, the Scripture states that Jesus Christ holds it all together.  Our world has gone the way of the fool, and God has a lot to say about the fool.  In Psalm 53:1 it is written; The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”  In Proverbs 28:26 we read the following; Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.

Never forget that “God Is”, and do not live in fear as I did for so many years, not knowing or believing this truth.  “I have chosen you and not cast you off; fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41: 9b-10).

David Prepares for Temple Building

1 Chronicles 22:1-5

April 7, 2023

Then David said, “Here shall be the house of the Lord God and here the altar of burnt offering for Israel.”

David Prepares for Temple Building

David commanded to gather together the resident aliens who were in the land of Israel, and he set stonecutters to prepare dressed stones for building the house of God.  David also provided great quantities of iron for nails for the doors of the gates and for clamps, as well as bronze in quantities beyond weighing, and cedar timbers without number, for the Sidonians and Tyrians brought great quantities of cedar to David.  For David said, “Solomon my son is young and inexperienced, and the house that is to be built for the Lord must be exceedingly magnificent, of fame and glory throughout all lands. I will therefore make preparation for it.” So, David provided materials in great quantity before his death.

From disappointment to preparation, what a swing in a person's emotion, that is what King David encountered.  The prophet Nathan told David, "Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the LORD is with you."   The next day coming back with; You’re not the man to build my house, it will be your son Solomon.  I’m not sure about David, but what about you and me, how have we dealt with our dreams of doing great things in God's kingdom?  Maybe we should look at what David did, he began to accumulate materials in massive quantities so that his very young son would have what was needed to do such a tremendous undertaking.  He also told his leadership team that Solomon would need their help building a temple for their God.

Now it gets very personal for me, in that we who are followers of Christ, have the Holy Spirit living in us, and we are members of God’s Church, and we are His temple.  Do we have the heart of a C.T. Studd, who was a British missionary, a contributor to The Fundamentals, and a cricketer?  One of his quotes that has stuck with me for years; “Some wish to live within the sound of a chapel bell, I want to run a rescue shop within a yard of Hell” I have found myself in both camps, but an ambassador for Christ will be about His Master business.

I also wanted to share two more quotes, that got my attention from C.T., “True religion is like smallpox. If you get it, you give it to others and it spreads.”  And this powerful truth, “I realized that my life was to be one of simple childlike faith and that my part was to trust in Him and He would work in me to do His good pleasure.  From that time my life was different.”

The question, each of us must deal with is how to move from disappointment to preparation.

David Builds an Altar

1 Chronicles 21:18-30

David Builds an Altar

Now the angel of the Lord had commanded Gad to say to David that David should go up and raise an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.  So, David went up at Gad's word, which he had spoken in the name of the Lord.   Now Ornan was threshing wheat. He turned and saw the angel, and his four sons who were with him hid themselves. 21 As David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David and went out from the threshing floor and paid homage to David with his face to the ground.  And David said to Ornan, “Give me the site of the threshing floor that I may build on it an altar to the Lord—give it to me at its full price—that the plague may be averted from the people.”  Then Ornan said to David, “Take it and let my lord the king do what seems good to him. See, I give the oxen for burnt offerings and the threshing sledges for the wood and the wheat for a grain offering; I give it all.” 24 But King David said to Ornan, “No, but I will buy them for the full price. I will not take for the Lord what is yours, nor offer burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”  So, David paid Ornan 600 shekels of gold by weight for the site.  And David built there an altar to the Lord and presented burnt offerings and peace offerings and called on the Lord, and the Lord answered him with fire from heaven upon the altar of burnt offering.  Then the Lord commanded the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath.

At that time, when David saw that the Lord had answered him at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, he sacrificed there.  For the tabernacle of the Lord, which Moses had made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering were at that time in the high place at Gibeon, but David could not go before it to inquire of God, for he was afraid of the sword of the angel of the Lord.

Often as I read the scriptures, I ask myself what would you have done when Ornan offered the threshing floor, the oxen, and the wheat for the burnt offering.  Knowing my flesh, I might have said, that sure is kind of you, but not David, he understood it had to be at a cost to him.  David also understood that God would not find pleasure in his actions if he did not pay the going price for all that he asked for.

Did you notice this great King and warrior was fearful of God’s angel with the sword?  It is a lesson we the Church of the Living God, should pay more attention to.  The Bible is full of Scriptures that tell us to be in fear of our God.  It also tells us the beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord.  Matthew 10:28, “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, fear the one who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”

David's Census Brings Pestilence

1 Chronicles 21:1-7

David's Census Brings Pestilence

Then Satan stood against Israel and incited David to number Israel.  So, David said to Joab and the commanders of the army, “Go, number Israel, from Beersheba to Dan, and bring me a report, that I may know their number.”  But Joab said, “May the Lord add to his people a hundred times as many as they are! Are they not, my lord the king, all of them my lord's servants? Why then should my lord require this? Why should it be a cause of guilt for Israel?”  But the king's word prevailed against Joab. So, Joab departed and went throughout all Israel and came back to Jerusalem.  And Joab gave the sum of the numbering of the people to David. In all Israel there were 1,100,000 men who drew the sword, and in Judah 470,000 who drew the sword.  But he did not include Levi and Benjamin in the numbering, for the king's command was abhorrent to Joab.

The United States has a big problem, they do not have a David, nor does it seem they do not have a Joab.  How is David different from our President, whoever that is?  David from a young man believed in God, he trusted in God to fight for him, and he saw how God was faithful in doing so.  We do not have such a person leading our nation.

But we have a much larger problem, in that a person who is not aware of their enemy will not be able to stand against them when they come to kill, steal, and destroy.  As Satan stood against Israel, he was standing against the United States of America.  Now this is the problem, most people took on the line of Flip Wilson, “The devil made me do it.”  Now that is not funny in that much, we do is instigated by the one Jesus said in John 10:10, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”  Many Church members have heard these words of Jesus, but they have little or no understanding of what Jesus was saying.  Many do not know their actions are more in keeping with their father the devil, than Jesus’s Father in heaven.  Satan when he talks with you sounds just like you, so you're not on guard.  It is easy for someone you do not believe is real to do a real number on you.

That is a big problem, the other is when Jesus said I have come to give life and you will have it in abundance, you ask, then why am I not driving a new car, and living in a big house with servants.  Well, you totally missed the message, for Jesus is not talking about stuff, but joy and peace, amid real problems.  He talked about life with Him and His Father forever.

Yes, Satan has asked for permission to do a number on the United States of America, and I believe God, has granted it.  The Scripture tells us in Isaiah 5:20, Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!”  That was in the Old Testament, and a wise person would listen but even most of God’s chosen people did not.

Today, we the Church,, are also instructed in
Romans 1:18-32, that we have been told of God's wrath that is coming on evil people.  In 2 Timothy 3:1-7, ‘do understand this, that in the last days, there will come times of difficulty.  For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.  For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins, and led astray by various passions, always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.”

When the Bible refers to the last days, we have been in them since Jesus went to sit at the right hand of the Father.  If you can read Romans 1:18-32 and 2 Timothy 3:1-7, and if you do not believe it is describing our nation, you are blind to the truth.
