One of you is a devil

 July 2, 2020

Mark 14:10 – 25

Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them.   And when they heard it, they were glad and promised to give him money. And he sought an opportunity to betray him.

Shall we see what Jesus said about Judas before he had betrayed Jesus?  Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.” (John 6:70)    Dr. Luke gives this account in Luke 22:1-4,  Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called the Passover.   And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to put him to death, for they feared the people.  Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve.   He went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers how he might betray him to them.”

The Passover with the Disciples

And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, “Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?”   And he sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him, and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’   And he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us.”  And the disciples set out and went to the city and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

And when it was evening, he came with the twelve.   And as they were reclining at the table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.”   They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?”   He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the dish with me.   For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”   And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing, it, broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.”   And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it.   And he said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.   Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

In that, I’m not even a good student much less a scholar, you will not be shocked that I had to search each of the gospels and to my amazement, only Dr. Luke tells us the following, Luke 22: 19, “And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

The apostle Paul shares this with us in 1 Corinthians 11:23-26,  For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you.  Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”   For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.”

You have read that Judas took 30 pieces of silver for his betrayal of Jesus, and when Satan pointed out what he had done he went out and hung himself.  That is not the end of the story, Judas will have eternity to relive his actions, in a place of darkness and isolation has always been a choice, no one has to end up there, so today ask Jesus to forgive your sins and to come and live in your body, He will, for He forgave my sins that were many and gave me life and hope.
