This world has been blessed to have many great preachers, such as Jonathan Edwards, George Whitefield, Charles H. Surgeon, and R.G. Lee to name a few, and one who ranks in that group is Laverne Hill Hunt. To my knowledge, she never preached from a pulpit, she never stood and spoke before thousands, but her life was a sermon to all she came in contact with.
Our heavenly Father spoke of her in Proverbs 31:10-12, “An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life.” I was a witness to the life of her great faith, and her life spoke this truth; “To be in Christ – that is redemption; but for Christ to be in you – that is sanctification! To be in Christ – that makes you fit for heaven; but for Christ to be in you – that makes you fit for earth! To be in Christ – that changes your destination; but for Christ to be in you – that changes your destiny! The one makes heaven your home – the other makes this world His workshop.” (The Saving Life of Christ page 19, by Major W. Ian Thomas)
Jan and I have been blessed and our lives were enriched by Laverne, she was always a friend, sometimes an adviser, always a lady who you could trust to stand with you in prayer. I searched for words to rightly express who she was to me, and found that God wrote this in keeping with the heart of Laverne; “Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.” (Proverbs 31:25-29)
