The Fifth Day

Genesis 1:20-23

Growing up close to Corpus Christi Bay in the fifties was thrilling, and many of my memories are of camping out on Padre Island, playing in the sand dunes, playing in the water, and trying to make it to the next sand bar that took you further from the shore.  I never learned to swim and it is amazing that I am alive to write about the fifth day of Creation.  While playing in that water, I never thought about what was in the water with me; starfish, urchins, live snails, and other creatures, like octopus, moray eels, hermit crabs, sea horses and many more. I was not concerned with sharks, dolphins, and stingrays, but was always on the look out for jellyfish, often they would be all around you but it was the Portuguese man of war that would put you out of action.  Today, I know too much about what is in that water, it is swarming with all kinds of living creatures, but in the fifties a young boy knew it was very close to paradise.

It is because of what God did on the fifth day of Creation that we are able to enjoy the many lakes, rivers, oceans and bays, and all that lives in them.  “And God said, ‘Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.’  So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind.  And God saw that it was good.  And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.”  And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.

While sitting on the back porch, with the hummingbird feeders and the beautiful oak trees, and the feeder that brings a wide variety of birds; one of our favorites is the Painted bunting and one that I would like to remove and tell God he died, is the Red-headed woodpecker, who will empty my feeder in one day.  As I write this account of the fifth day, I am so thankful that our Creator, Jesus Christ made the fifth day, Colossians 1:15,16 gives this account: “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.  For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.”
