Why I Tithe

Why I Tithe

1.   It is not because of Old Testament law, as many believe!  Long before Moses was given the Law, before any mention of giving a tithe, God’s Holy Spirit put into the heart of Abram to tithe, see Genesis 14:20.

2.   Before Moses and the Law, God put into the heart of Jacob to tithe, see Genesis 28:20-22

3.   Now look at Leviticus 27:30

4.   Now let's look at Malachi 3:6-11 on the topic of Robbing God!

5.   We have both the Prophet’s words on giving and the Commands of Jesus Christ.  First Isaiah 58:7 and then Jesus' words in Matthew 5:42 and look at Luke 12:32-34.  But the kicker is found in Matthew 25:35-40.  For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,  I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’  Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?  And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you?  And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’  And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers,[a] you did it to me.”

6.   Are their promises to a generous person? Look at Proverbs 11:25; 22:9 and Jesus made this promise in Luke 6:38, “Give, and it will be given to you.  A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be poured into your lap.  For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”  An example is when I stop at Braum’s and they pact out a pint of ice cream for me, I want it pressed down and shaken, no voids.  What measure are you using on the things God has entrusted into your care?

7.   Has the Bible given rules for giving?

a.   According to Income: See Deuteronomy 16:17.

b.   Without showiness: See Matthew 6:3.

c.    Freely: See Matthew 10:8 and Luke 12:33

d.   With Straightforwardness: See Romans 12:8

e.   Regularly: See 1 Corinthians 16:2

f.     Cheerfully: See 2 Corinthians 9:7

8.      A warning on wanting others to observe your generosity.

a.      Look at Matthew 6:1

9.      Stinginess will only bring troubles to your life.

a.       Look at Proverbs 11:24; 21:13; 28:27

If you are not at this time giving a tithe and have been convicted to do so, make sure you follow the “rules of giving” and watch God open the gates of blessing on your life.
