The adulterous woman

October 9, 2018

Proverbs 23:26-28

“My son, give me your heart and let your eyes delight in my ways, for an adulterous woman is a deep pit, and a wayward wife is a narrow well.  Like a bandit she lies in wait and multiplies the unfaithful among men.” (NIV)
“My son, give me your heart and let your eyes observe my ways.  For a prostitute is a deep pit; an adulteress is a narrow well.  She lies in wait like a robber and increases the traitors among mankind.” (ESV)

Many a man has fallen into the act of an adulterous woman, and it is because they are listening to Channel One the deceitful one Jesus calls the thief.  Why do we listen to this Channel? First, the voice sounds like ours, and second, it tells us we deserve better than we are getting at this time.  But a wise person understands that Channel Two is the Holy Spirit and it has much less volume, and tells us often what we do not want to hear.  The enemy uses Channel One to plant a seed, and you begin to admire the qualities in someone else wife.  Your good friends, so you tell her in confidence how you wish your wife had those talents, and how you admire her.  It may be innocent and you are hoping she can help your wife.  But you just crossed a line, you did not know about the line, but if she also is unhappy and looking for someone she admires and you fit the bill, you are history.

So young men and not so young shall we explore what Solomon has to share with us on the subject?  “For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; but in the end, she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword.”  It is the but’s that get us, it is the best thing you ever experience, then things change, you lost a family, friends, and broke your vow to both God and man.

But one should not quit reading in Proverbs 5, for you will see that an adulterer gives no thought to the path of life, she is all about getting what she desires at that moment.  I’ve learned over the years to pray for the husband of such a woman and the woman, and you cannot lust and pray for a person’s marriage.  I also believe it is wise to share with her husband if he is a follower of Christ the reason you are praying, it makes the enemy go to another plan.  Never forget just as God has a good plan for you, the enemy has a plan to steal, kill and destroy.

Let’s end with this counsel from Proverbs 5:18-20, “Let your fountain be blessed and rejoice in the wife of your youth, a lovely deer, a graceful doe.  Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love.  Why should you be intoxicated, my son, with a forbidden woman and embrace the bosom of an adulteress?”
