Jeremiah 43:1-7
When we explore the written word of God, it is important to understand who is being written about. First, we have Jeremiah a prophet of God and His mouthpiece to the people of Judah. But we also have leaders of the people, men of titles and authority such as Azariah, Johanan and as the Scriptures state all the other arrogant men.
“When Jeremiah had finished speaking to all the people all the words of the Lord their God—all these words the Lord their God had sent him to give them— then Azariah son of Hoshaiah, Johanan son of Kareah, and all the other arrogant men responded to Jeremiah, “You are speaking a lie! The Lord, our God, has not sent you to say, ‘You must not go to Egypt to live there for a while!’ Rather, Baruch son of Neriah is inciting you against us to hand us over to the Chaldeans to put us to death or to deport us to Babylon!” Your version may have referred to them as insolent men, but they were people who wanted a God who did what they wished or thought best. I bet you have met such people my prayer is that you are not one of them. The Bible has much to say about people like this, often as I read in the Proverbs and Psalms, I have seen that it is easy to forget that I am the created and must keep my eyes on the Creator. Shall we observe a few verses to shine light on what is happening with these arrogant men? (Jeremiah 43:1-3)
Proverbs 12:25; “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advise.”
Proverbs 29:9; “If a wise man has an argument with a fool, the fool only rages and laughs, and there is no quiet.”
Proverbs 16:18; “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”
Psalm 17:10; ”They close their hearts to pity; with their mouths, they speak arrogantly.”
Because they did not listen to God’s message from the lips of Jeremiah, the leaders of the army rounded up the people and headed for Egypt and they also took Jeremiah and his scribe Baruch along and they got to Tahpanhes.
