What I learned from watching the Super Bowl
The Super Bowl and life on planet earth have many things in common, both
have time segments in the Super Bowl we call them quarters, and in this life,
we call them the seasons. Youth would be the first quarter, the second quarter
is moving out of youth into becoming a young adult, and with that more
responsibility, the third quarter is for most, marriage and raising a family,
and the fourth quarter is for many retirement.
We all expect to make it until the fourth
quarter, but that’s not a sure bet, for it seems life like football has many
surprises. Many a person believed last night that it was a done deal when
the score was 28 – 3, but they still had a quarter to go and surprise surprise,
it did not happen the way some expected.
The Bible gives insight into the game of
life, and it also has surprises. “Your eyes
saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the
days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.”
Psalm 139:16) What about Matthew 6:27, “And which
of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?”
And James 4:14, “Yet you do not know what tomorrow
will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little
time and then vanishes.” And many of us my age acts as if we
have years to go in the game of life, but a wise person understands no one
knows but the Father when our time on planet earth will come to an end.
God sent His Son to buy you and I out of the
grip of sin by dying on a cross and paying our sin debt. It is simple we
have all sinned and fallen short of God’s requirement, and Jesus did what we
could not do; paid a debt He did not owe. His grace is free to all who
will by faith in His finished work on the cross and ask Him for forgiveness and
believe in our heart that God has raised Him from the dead. That is how
one enters by faith into Christ and becomes clean by His blood shed for the
forgiveness of sin.
Now many a person has come up with a better
plan, it is called religion, your goodness, what you can do, but a Holy God
calls that foolishness, or as stated in the Bible, it is to Him as filthy
rags. Or as mentioned in Proverbs 14:12, “There
is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.”
So since none of us knows the time of our
fourth quarter, why have it be a surprise, but be ready, with expectations.

Bob Rice
